Lacuna, Inc., why can't you exist for me?

i read your words with horror
tell me why this troubles me so
because this trouble's mine
and i don't even know
i'm stalked by memories
just when i think i'm absolved
i guess crazy finds insane eventually
because i'm still dreaming you
the dark dangerous shadow
still coming for me in my head
ready for god knows what

in soft focus anyone can be a movie star.

damn, i used to be so hot.
p.s. i have decided the new best name ever for a band is crane-neck trainwreck. say that three times fast.

oh man! old school!

i found these stored in a yahoo photos folder i forgot even existed. they're from a visit back to dawson creek the summer before joel and i met.

man, do i ever miss these kids. i swear i felt more at home hanging out with them than the adults sometimes. they stuck to me like glue - always wanting piggyback rides and to be hung upside down or spun around the room. i was a freaking human jungle gym for these kids.

now they're all in elementary school and probably don't remember me much. but i do remember that zachary, the one in the orange, was definitely upset that i moved. his family was church-going and he used to get up and pray for "my friend" [which was me] after i moved.

good times.

live tonight!

Tonight, Rita and I are going to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers! We have some super bitchin' tickets - so bitchin' I won't even say how bitchin' for fear someone will come to my house and beat my head in just to get them! They're hot.
I'm also really excited because Gnarls Barkley is opening. I hear they put on some crazy shows - oops, no pun intended - and can't wait to see what they'll be up to tonight!
Also, pre-show, Rita and I will be watching the classic film Follow That Bird! which I have tivo'd and saved for this very occasion. Rita and I have been talking about it for ages and I can't wait to see it again. A powder blue Big Bird? Who doesn't love that? Plus, I saw a little snippet the other day and forgot that Gordon, Maria, Olivia and Luis are in the movie - it's an all-round old-school Sesame Street joint and you all are jealous you're not watching it with me.
I freaking love Jim Henson.

sunday

can't

you wanted a wonderful life
well here it is
i'm yours and you're mine and
now that we've got it
i'm feeling more selfish than ever
when i'm supposed to be selfless
i'm consumed with want want want
delicate degenerated code of ethics
it's all a game of strategy
the balance of keeping me sated
because boredom is such a gnawing beast
eating brain and dream and drive
when it's what i need to stay alive
digging ditches for my wishes
pining for stones around my neck
where's the creativity i promised myself
it's buried in a picture box
underneath my skin
begging to be heard
but muffled by the layers
by the naysayers
in my head

it's not that i don't want.

if another person asks me when i am going to have a baby/if i want a baby i will slug them.

unless they are a stranger.

but even then it's iffy.

one of the kids i babysit asked me, "has a baby ever come out of your tummy?"

when i said no, he replied, "not ever? you should have a baby."

i told him, "but gavin, if i have a baby, i will be too busy to come over and play with you."

he looked at me and said, "i don't want you to have a baby."

a dream deferred. plus: chocolate milk and dead snakes!

though thus far i had neglected to mention it, i WAS going to do the jeopardy online test tonight. i was really excited as being on jeopardy has been a long-held nerd fantasy for me.
well, life happened and some family of joel's came into town and due to my work and joel's the only time we could see them was tonight - the night of the test.
i'm pretty fucking disappointed, but i'll live.
so, now i wait til next year. oh well, after watching this week, i got really nervous about it as the categories were a little difficult - i mean a whole category of questions about haile selassie, really? what's up with that?
oh well.
talked to my sister tonight. she is very excited about coming down to visit. she and her man are planning to come for my birthday! how awesome. i just hope we're out of the poor house by then and can really get into some activities with them. i'm already staking out fun low-budget ideas to entertain them, but if any locals have suggestions, i'm all ears. my sister's boyfriend is 23 and has never been on a plane before. this ought to be good.
things have been interesting lately. it's a whole new world when you spend your days with children. on saturday, i looked after shark's kids [of diarrhea diary fame] and they gave me a run for the money indeed. gavin was in classic form, hurling things like pez dispensers and shoes across the room. adelaide spilled chocolate milk down the front of a white t-shirt which i hope is salvagable after its two runs through the washing machine. chocolate milk came into play later that day after gavin knocked a cupfull off a table and into a pair of addie's shoes.
we also had a run in with a snake in the house. i was handcrafting lunch out of peanut butter and jam when i heard addie's trembling little voice coming from the hallway informing me there was a snake in the house. i admit, even though i live in florida now, i didn't think much of it at first. i thought perhaps it was a worm or large slug or something.
nope, it was indeed a snake. gavin asked it was a wild animal and thankfully had someone smart teaching him that wild animals should be treated carefully - the kids were very good about listening when i asked them to stay away from it. at first i wasn't sure if it was alive and wasn't sure what to do. however, as i was processing my thoughts, one of the sharkeys' cats, jenny, came into the hallway and began to bat the snake and toss it around. the snake made no effort to dissuade jenny from her play and i noticed a wound towards its back end.
thank god tonya has a kitchen well-stocked with items from her work with pampered chef! i found a pair of rubber-tipped tongs and carefully picked up the snake. there was no response or movement. i breathed a sigh of relief. after gavin grabbed my shoes from the front door, i asked the children if they knew where the family's trashcans were outside. unfortunately, no. after looking around the side of the house, still carrying the snake with the tongs, i decided i couldn't just leave it out in the backyard for jenny to simply retrieve and startle us all over again. i decided to toss it over the fence into the front yard. at least this way, if the snake came back to haunt us, it was gonna take jenny a heck of a lot longer to find it.
tonya informed me later that jenny has a habit of presenting the household with such gifts, though this was the first snake. usually, she brings in lizards. i suppose someone likes me.

it amazes me how i could handle it so calmly. if something similar had happened to me in my own home, i don't know if i would deal with it without panic. hell, i scream like a little girl if i see a cockroach in my house. i guess when you have other people who depend on you to take care of things, it's just easier to suck it up and deal with it.

"is that it dad, did the penguin tell you to do this?"

billy madison = classic.

today the light was good

another reason why shark's kids rule.

gavin asks me, "do you have a diary?"

at this, addie pipes up, "diarrhea is poop."

best. kids. ever.

"m-o-o-n, that spells tom cullen."

met the baby i will be sitting. his name is goodwin and he's super cute.
i'm going for a trial babysit on thursday morning. then i start for reals on monday. very excited.
oh yeah. they also have three chihuahuas!
tomorrow i will [hopefully] be getting a haircut! thank the freaking gods. i have been in need of one way too long. it's gotten to the point i have been contemplating cutting part of it myself, which, for the most part, has not usually turned out well.
i love and hate snow patrol. stupid sappy ballads being so pretty i can't stand it.
today i realized that i have always adored michael j. fox because he looks like a less-freckled version of the boy i had the hugest unrequited crush on in elementary school. i never noticed it until i was watching the end of 'the secret of my success' today.
i'm such the biggest dork.
i am tivo-ing stephen king's 'the stand'. i can't wait to watch it. i wonder if it will be shitty by today's standards? probably, but i don't care. it'll be a good way to eat up a bored and rainy day.
anyways, i've got an appointment with some dishes that sorely need washing. i'll catch you later.

Kristy: Hot Babysitter Du Jour

I'm babysitting again in full force. Yesterday I spent the afternoon chilling with Jaeden, Sheri's son. He is quite the kid. We spent the afternoon drawing and playing with marble tracks and watching the Dog Whisperer. I think it's pretty funny that a kid who has a bunch of DVDs of cartoons and such was downright insistant that we watch the Dog Whisperer DVD. He is obsessed with dogs - his own and bulldogs. He made me draw him pictures of bulldogs for him to color in. Thank god I could churn something out that remotely resembled one...

When Sheri dropped me off at home, she let me know that she and Tonya [Shark's wife] will be doing some workshops on Wednesday nights now and was wondering if I could babysit. Not sure if this means just Jaeden or if it will be Jaeden, Gavin, and Addie, but either way, I'm stoked. And on top of this, earlier in the week, she contacted me on behalf of a client of hers who was looking for a sitter for about 2-3 hours Monday through Friday for a four month-old baby boy! So tomorrow I'm going over there at 4 to meet with them and discuss a weekly fee and all that jazz. It'll be interesting - she wants me there from about 2-5ish and Sheri wants me there on Wednesday nights at 6ish til 9pm. It's a good thing they live fairly close to each other!

So, I'm pretty happy. I'm going to be getting out of the house for a few hours and feeling more useful, purposeful. At first I was in love with not working - but I had so much more to focus on and I did a lot of travelling, then I got here and life just stood really still. I'm just getting used to coping with that and now I'm going to start moving again. I'm really excited.

Sheri asked me yesterday how old I was - she had guessed 21 or 22,but 24 at the oldest. Man, I hope I continue to look young for a long time! *LOL* She said I had a young look and a young spirit. When she found out that I was 26, she asked why I wasn't having any kids! Actually, she told me I should because if I didn't, it would be a waste of great mommy energy. Hahahaha. If only she knew the bits of baby fever that have been gnawing at me lately! Fortunately, that baby fever is tempered with brains that know that now is just so not the time. I thought being around kids would make it worse, and sometimes it is, but mostly, I'm just glad to have that fix in the form of someone else's kids.

This way I can still end up having friends come over at 11pm for Arrested Development and beer! People generally do not want to come over for drinks or even that late when you've got small kids! *LOL*

So yeah, looking after a baby will be interesting. It's been a while since I've been around babies, but I have no doubt I will be able to do the job well. I've been reading up on babies and at four months, they really start getting into discovering and developing humor and that's where I am pretty skilled. I love making babies laugh!

I just remember how cool it was to be around my second cousin Niels and I think this should be cake. Cake with icing on it.

Just not the dirty diapers part.

i have always had a thing for pirates...
